March 17, 2021

We want to continue to thank customers for conservation measures taken during the extreme winter weather in February  2021. Lowering thermostats, reducing lighting and unplugging unnecessary items assisted in keeping both our electricity and natural gas in supply. At the Board of Public Works meeting held on March 15, 2021, a plan was adopted to recover natural gas funds from the drastic increase in costs in the event that relief is not granted. For a 3-year period, for residential customers an additional winter (November through May statements) adder of $0.17 per ccf and summer (June through October statements) adder of $1.365 per ccf will appear on utility statements. For commercial customers, the winter adder is $.12 per ccf and the summer adder is $1.07 per ccf. The calculated amount will be displayed separately beginning with April 2021 statements as “Gas (ccf) 2021 Adder”. The additional $1 million in electric commodity expenses incurred during the same period of time is not being passed on to customers, but rather paid from reserves. MMU will continue to monitor the investigations into price gouging and whether or not financial assistance will be granted. We also encourage customers to contact elected officials at the state and federal level to support them in finding answers to this situation. The timeline of additional information is provided in the correspondence below.
