Financial Reports
Macon Municipal Utilities, a public entity, operates on an accrual basis of accounting. Unlike a cash basis of account which works like a typical checking account, accrual accounting recognizes revenues when earned and expenses when incurred. MMU’s primary revenues are charges for services (electric, natural gas, water and wastewater), these revenues are recorded in the month customers use the services. Likewise, expenses are recorded when they are used, and for large “capital” assets this is in the form of depreciation over the useful life of a truck for instance or when inventory parts are placed into the system instead of when purchased.
