The EPA is requiring all Public Water Supply systems to conduct a Lead Service Line Inventory of both public and privately owned water services. We are sending out this required survey in our efforts to obtain information about the privately owned (customer side) service lines within the system. This information is crucial for us to complete our system material evaluation. We greatly appreciate the members of our community for taking the time to participate in this important study.

If you have any questions, please contact Mike Llewellyn at 660-395-6851 or [email protected]. Hard copies of the survey are available at Macon Municipal Utilities Business Office, 106 W Bourke, Macon, MO.

What you need:

  • Flathead screwdriver or coin
  • Strong refrigerator magnet

Steps to check your service line:

1. Find the water service line entering your house (often found entering the house through the basement wall, slab floor, or crawlspace).

2. Use the flathead screwdriver or coin to carefully scratch the pipe surface.

3. Compare the scratched area to the following descriptions:

     a. If it looks shiny and silver, the pipe is made of lead. A magnet will not stick to a lead pipe.

     b. If it is a dull gray color with no noticeable scratch on the surface, the pipe is galvanized steel. A magnet will stick to a   galvanized steel pipe.

     c. If it is the same color as a penny, the pipe is copper. A magnet will not stick to a copper pipe.

     d. If it is smooth and red, blue, white, or black, the pipe is plastic. A magnet will not stick to a plastic pipe.
